District announces open enrollment

AUSTINTOWN - The Austintown Local School District is now accepting enrollment for the 2017-18 school year.

The district is currently taking students in kindergarten through eighth grades based on current class size availability.

Although ninth to 12th grades are closed, students are still able to apply for special programs such as Falcon Pride Online and STEM.

To apply, visit www.austintownschools.org under "Registration" and "Open Enrollment."

Academic team takes first place

AUSTINTOWN - The Austintown junior varsity Academic Team was awarded first place at the Feb. 25 tournament at Youngstown State University.

Senior Tim Gay and juniors Katrina Neff and Nathan Clark competed against 20 other JV teams.

In addition to placing first in their division, the students also placed third overall.

Basketball game to benefit custodian

AUSTINTOWN - The public is invited to cheer on the Austintown teaching staff and fifth-grade boys basketball teams 5:30 p.m. Monday in the Austintown Fitch High School gymnasium.

The student-versus-staff basketball game will raise money to support Team Ray "Flash" Gordon, head custodian at Fitch, who currently is battling cancer.

The cost of the event is a minimum donation of $2.

In addition the game, there will be a basket raffle, performances by the Jazz Band, Fitch Cadets and the Spirit Club, as well as concessions and a half-court shooting contest.

District offers registration

The Austintown Local School District will hold kindergarten registration for the 2017-18 school year for students residing in the school district.

Kindergarten registration packets will be available 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday to Friday at Austintown Elementary School and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday at Austintown Early Learning Center. The packet explains all necessary documents needed.

All new kindergarten students must attend a registration and screening appointment. Registration and screening for the 2017-18 school year will be done only by appointment at Austintown Elementary School, 245 Idaho Road-Lynn Kirk Loop, Austintown.

Committee accepts scholarship apps

YOUNGSTOWN - The scholarship committee of the Women Retirees of Youngstown State University is accepting applications to April 1.

The scholarship is awarded to a full-time, junior female student who maintains a minimum 3.0 grade point average. The recipient must be a United States citizen and enrolled in a degree-seeking program.

Information about the scholarship is available at www.ysu.edu/finaid/scholarships.

Application forms can be printed from the website or picked up at the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships, located on the second floor of Meshel Hall.

Students plan PI Day race

CANFIELD - A 3.14 mile PI Day Trail Run Challenge is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center in honor of Pi Day.

The race was organized by the students in the culinary, cosmetology and creative arts programs at MCCTC to raise money for the clients at the Rescue Mission of the Mahoning Valley.

The course will cover pavement, grassy fields and muddy trails on the MCCTC campus. T-shirts are guaranteed to all participants pre-registered. Those who finish the race will receive a pie, and there will be winners in all age groups.

Proceeds from the $25 pre-registration or $30 day of event will go to fund the filling of the food pantry at MCCTC.

Students, as a part of their course work, will then prepare meals to be shared the pantry with clients at the Rescue Mission in Youngstown.

MCCTC salon extends hours

CANFIELD?- The Salon at Mahoning County Career and Technical Center recently announced new and extended hours.

The student-run salon will now be open to the public 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesdays through Thursdays.
