Time was set aside at the Feb. 28 Board of Education meeting to honor the members of the Stadium Drive Elementary School Math 24 team.
The team had nine of its 11 members win medals at the Math 24 Challenge Jan. 24 at Campbell Elementary / Middle School.
"These students really brought honor, not only to Stadium Drive, but to the whole Boardman School District," Stadium Drive Principal Michael Zoccali said. "They really knocked it out of the park."
The team consisted of Mike Demetrios; Abbi Mihok; Ava Freeborough; Sarah Land, who placed fourth overall; Marissa Funk; Ivan Rudiak; Mason Nawrocki; Caitlin Lehnerd; Marissa Marino, who placed third; Ava Commons who placed second; and Kosta Cvercko. The team was coached by Stadium Drive fourth-grade math teacher Nadia Jacobs.
Zoccali said at the Math 24 competition, students are given cards with a set of numbers on them. Using various math equations, they then have to come up with the number 24. The challenge is done in tournament style, and this year's competition included 200 students in fourth to eighths grades.
Each student present at the meeting received a certificate of recognition for their achievements at the tournament and received personal congratulations from school board members.
On a different matter, the board approved the purchase of 10 2018 72-passenger Blue Bird buses from Cardinal Bus Sales and Service Inc. of Lima. The cost of each bus is $84,916 for a total of $849,160, minus $25,000 for trade-ins.
"We will purchase two buses and lease to purchase eight buses with a five-year lease agreement," Superintendent Tim Saxton said. "This is a cost-effective way to maintain the fleet."
In other business, the following donations were accepted by the board:
