The Boardman boys cross country team successfully opened the 2013 season with a second place finish out of 24 schools at the OHSAA Division I Preseason Invitational on Saturday, Aug. 17. The Spartans placed five of the top 45 runners in a field of 223.
Senior Mark Hadley took first at a time of 15:34, while classmate Alan Burns was sixth overall with a time of 16:37. They were followed by sophomore Nathan Hadley who placed 16th with a time of 16:58, senior Justin Maroni in 21st place at 17:09, and senior Jacob Kelleck was 45th with a time of 17:42.
"Great way to start our season," said Spartan head coach John Phillips. "Getting to compete at the state course is a plus and the results were a nice bonus."

Junior Juan Santiago placed 70th in a time of 18:12, junior Nick Long was 87th in a time of 18:28, and senior Trevor Leyden was 99th in a time of 18:41. Rounding the 10 Spartan runners were freshman Nathaniel Ams in 152nd at 19:51 and sophomore Ethan Schwendeman in 172nd at 20:25.
"We have a tremendous opportunity to have a very special season in 2013," said Phillips. "We need to stay healthy, work hard, and improve each and every day and we should be in the mix come November. Our goal is to be back here as a team on Nov. 2."
