Austintown Relay set for Friday

June 5, 2013
Special to the Town Crier

The American Cancer Society will be holding its annual Relay For Life of Austintown on Friday, June 7. Since 1985, Relay For Life has grown from one man - Dr. Gordy Klatt, who walked, jogged and ran around a track for 24 hours raising money for his local American Cancer Society unit - to a movement to eliminate cancer that now takes place in more than 5,100 communities in the United States and in 20 other countries around the world. Nearly 4 million people participate in the life-changing event, which has raised a total of more than $4 billion to fund the American Cancer Society's mission.

Everyone in Austintown and surrounding areas who have been touched by cancer are invited to attend. This team event builds friendship among team members by having fun and raising money for the fight against cancer. It's the perfect team-building event for any organization.

The event consists of teams who spend 24 hours together in efforts to raise money and fight cancer.

Relay For Life is about celebrating, remembering and fighting back.

The Society celebrates cancer survivors by inviting all local cancer survivors to start each Relay event. The Survivors Lap honors those who have won their fight against cancer and those who are currently undergoing treatment. This Lap follows the Opening Ceremonies that begins at 6 p.m. on June 7. Following the Survivor Lap there is a Survivor Dinner that will be held inside Fitch High School.

The Society remembers all of those touched by cancer with the Luminaria Ceremony after dusk. The track is lined with luminaria marked with the names of those who survived and those who lost their battle with cancer. The Luminaria Ceremony will begin at 9:45 p.m. June 7.

The Society also wants to recognize the caregivers that have been there for their loved ones who have been diagnosed with cancer. This year, Relay For Life of Austintown will have a Caregiver Garden that will display the names of those who gave so much for the ones they love on flowers (stars). On Saturday, June 8 after the Fight Back Ceremony, there will also be a Caregiver Lap followed by a lunch.

The Society fights back by raising money for research, education, local patient services, and advocacy.

This year, our community will have the unique opportunity to participate first hand in a landmark new cancer research study, Cancer Prevention Study-3 (CPS-3). This is an opportunity for those of us who have never been diagnosed with cancer to actively get involved in the very research our Austintown Relay For Life efforts help to fund, to help prevent cancer for this and future generations. Enrollment will be taking place at our Relay at 5 p.m. Friday, June 7. For more information please visit www.cancer.org/cps.

The event is also filled with music, live entertainment, games and other activities. This year, the Relay For Life of Austintown with have Ovations as their main event. They will begin playing after the opening laps and continue to play until midnight.

This year's goal is to raise $125,000 from the event. For more information, call Francesca Kostek at 888-227-6446.
