When "Damn Yankees" opens at the Boardman Performing Arts Center this weekend, Luke Markovitch takes the stage as middle-aged baseball fan Joe Boyd, who is given an opportunity to lead the Washington Senators into World Series victory by the devil named Mr. Applegate, played by Dom Zocolo. Boyd is transformed into the younger "Shoeless" Joe Hardy (Cory Fowler) from Hannibal, Mo. Young Joe becomes the Senators' star player, but his soul is at stake, although he isn't worried, since he built an escape clause into his contract with Applegate.
To see that Joe doesn't get a chance to exercise that clause, Applegate sends his beautiful assistant, Lola, played by Paige Perez, to seduce the ballplayer.
"Damn Yankees" will be performed at 7 p.m. Friday, April 19 and Saturday, April 20, and at 5 p.m. Sunday, April 21. After the Sunday show, the Boardman Parent Teacher Student Association will offer a $3 dessert fundraiser to benefit the senior scholarship program. The cast will be on hand for a meet and greet during the reception.
