February 26, 2020
The Town Crier

Students from three different Austintown Schools will perform on Saturday, Feb. 29 at the Austintown Fitch High School cafeteria during the Austintown Band Parents Club, Inc. annual spaghetti dinner. The dinner, which began in the early 1960s, is a primary fundraiser for the band parents organization which has donated instruments and uniforms to the band programs since the 1940s. Homemade spaghetti sauce will be made, starting at 6 a.m. on Saturday morning by the parents, from an old secret recipe given to them by former band director Joe Pelligrini. Dinner, which consists of salad, bread, spaghetti and meatballs and a cupcake, will be served from noon until 7 p.m. Sit down and take out is available.

At noon the Austintown Intermediate School's fifth grade band, under the direction of Jackie Mortimer and Jeremy McClaine will begin the day of entertainment. At 1 p.m., the Fitch Freshman Band, conducted Wesley O'Connor, will perform. They will be followed at 1:30 p.m. by O'Connor's Fitch Concert Band. O'Connor's Fitch Jazz 2 is scheduled for 2 p.m. with Fitch Jazz 1 at 2:30 p.m. He will present the High School's Symphonic Band for selections at 3 p.m. At 4 p.m., Austintown Middle School's sixth grade band, under the direction of McClaine, will take the stage followed at 5 p.m. by the AMS Jazz Ensemble. The musical programs will conclude with McClaine and the AMS seventh grade band at 6 p.m. and the AMS eighth grade band at 6:30 p.m.

In addition to the dinners and concerts, the band parents will hold a huge basket raffle with baskets, unique items, gift cards and tickets to symphony and sporting events from noon until 6 p.m. Each grade level band group has also donated a special themed basket. The dinner is $8 for adults, senior (65+) and students prices are $5, with concert-only tickets priced at $3. Children 4 and under are free. Quarts of meatballs with sauce will be available for $5.

The dinner concert is a warm up for the high school bands who will hold their Annual Concert on Wednesday, March 4 at 7 p.m. in the Fitch Auditorium.

In addition to funds being raised for instruments and uniforms, the band parents also help organize a trip for the high school band each year. On March 14, the Fitch Marching Band will perform in the 65th annual Chicago St. Patrick's Day Parade. While in the Chicago the Jazz Bands will also perform and the students will be treated to a performance of Blue Man Group along with a Chicago pizza experience.
