CVMS tops donors for Second Harvest

Students at Canfield Village Middle School have again proved they care. They collected 45 boxes of food for Second Harvest Food Bank that came in at 4,933 pounds of non-perishables. The amount is said to provide 7,400 meals for those in need in the Mahoning Valley.

The amount collected also puts CVMS at the top for the food drive.

"We have been one of the top donors in four out of five years doing the food drive," said CVMS Principal Judd Rubin. "We collected it from Nov. 4 to 22 (last day of school before break). We had a theme for each day. For example: Macaroni Monday, Tin Can Tuesday, Thanksgiving Thursday."

The donations came primarily from the students and staff at the school. As far as the students are concerned, the event shows they understand an important aspect of life.

"It says our student council students really understand what it means to be 'civic minded' and how good it feels to help others," Rubin said. "The students at CVMS followed along and bought into the message about the season of giving."

Rubin said it is not over for the students yet. The school also does Operation Christmas Carol.

"We take our entire seventh grade to Target and we have over 100 families that we purchase gifts for," he said. "We then take the students to the Southern Park Mall food court for lunch. It is a very special day."
