Nine young men from Canfield attended this year's Boys State, being sponsored by American Legion Post 177 in Canfield. The Post sponsors the young men who have a unique opportunity to be part of a working government.

Boys State is held each summer in Ohio on a university campus around Columbus. Young men are selected by their local American Legion Post to attend. The students, mostly in their junior and sometimes senior year must complete an application and a face-to-face interview.

At Boys State, each delegate will take on a job as they form local, state and federal government positions. The young men actually run a mock government from all levels, while making laws, enforcing them and holding elections.

The 2019 Buckeye Boys State Delegates are Joe Scoleri, Josh Comport, Bobby Smallwood, Joey Bruno, Connor Sigler, Samuel Moore, Nick Goodrich and Jake Fay. Missing is James Hartshorn.

One of this year's Canfield delegates was Jacob Fay. Jacob will be a senior at CHS this fall. He plays soccer, is a member of the Northeast Regional Honors Orchestra (2019, 2020), OMEA (Ohio Music Educators Association) All State Band (2017), OMEA All State Orchestra (2018) and Honors Wind Symphony (2017, 2018), and is a member of National Honor Society (NHS).

At Boys State, Jacob was elected as a Senator in the General Assembly.

"I learned parliamentary proceedings as well as paying taxes and finances, and embarrassingly, tying a tie," he said about the experience.

Joseph Scolieri is another of this year's delegates. Joseph plays hockey and Lacrosse and will be a senior this fall at CHS. He was fortunate enough to take on the role of Associate Supreme Court Justice.

"I learned a lot about government," Joseph said. "I realized that campaigning and running for office not only costs a lot of money, but takes up a lot of time. I also learned about what appeals process and how other officers of the court perform their jobs. As a Justice on the Supreme Court, I learned what types of cases that can and cannot be tried in the Supreme Court. I also learned how to write opinions on cases. Buckeye Boys State has more to offer than just knowledge about government. You meet a ton of new people and make a lot of friends."
