Over 50 years ago a tradition was started in Poland that is going strong today. It is the annual Poland Presbyterian Church Strawberry Festival.

The festival features strawberries with delicious homemade shortcakes made from a special recipe the members of the church have used for the festival.

"Last year we made 400 cakes and they were all gone," said church member Teisha Winkler. "This year we are doing 500."

Poland Presbyterian Church members Teisha Winkler and Nan Bennett measure and mix batch upon batch of a special shortcake recipe that was used to make 500 biscuits that were used for the annual strawberry festival’s key dessert.

Winkler, along with Sue Perry, Nan Bennett, and Joan Smith started baking on Thursday afternoon. After a little over two hours, the crew had the 500 prepared for fresh strawberries and ice cream the following day.

The Strawberry Festival has always been a big hit in Poland, even before Celebrate Poland. Now it has become an important part of the celebration and serves to kick off the Friday line up of events. But the festival has another important aspect as a fundraiser.

"All the money that is made here at the Strawberry Festival pays for our high school members to go on mission trips," said YSU student Sam Snyder. "I went on several mission trips during my high school days, it was a great experience."
