Boardman Alumni Association selects recipients of 2019 Boardman High School Distinguished Alumni Award

The Officers and Council of the Boardman High School Alumni Association announced the selections for the 10th annual Boardman High School Distinguished Alumni award.

The purpose of the Boardman High School Distinguished Alumni Award is to recognize outstanding alumni of Boardman High School who have maintained a high standard of excellence and made a significant contribution in their fields of endeavor. These individuals' must best exemplify the ideals and spirit of Boardman High School, and should serve as role models for current and future Boardman High School students. The 2019 inductees were:

Patricia McGovern Sweeney, Class of 1974

Posing during the announcement of this year’s distinguished alumni award winners are Karen Kreps (BAA Vice-President), Patricia McGovern Sweeney (2019 Inductee), John Darnell (2019 Inductee), Vickie Davis (BAA Member) and Cheryl Tarantino (BAA President).

Sweeney is currently the Health commissioner for Mahoning County Public Health where she led more than 30 community organizations to assess, develop and implement a community-wide health improvement plan.

Prior to her current role, Sweeney was a faculty member at the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health teaching public health and ethics. She has played a major role in securing nearly 20 significant public health grants. Patricia has received numerous national, state and local awards as well as held a leadership or advisory position on 25 area boards or organizations. She is still actively serving on 12.

John Darnell, Class of 1966

Darnell is the editor of the Boardman News, which has been in publication since 1947. He was an instrumental steering committee member in major local capital campaigns such as The Field of Dreams, Township Administration Building, Performing Arts Center and Tech Center which would become Boardman Schools Television Network. He has been active on several levy campaigns for the Boardman Schools and the Boardman Police. Darnell also served on President's Council at Youngstown State for many years.

The inductees were presented with the award at the Senior Honors Assembly on May 22 in front of all BHS students, faculty and senior parents. A copy of their award plaque will be placed on the Alumni wall outside of the BHS office.
