Bio Blitz success could mean an annual event

On May 16, a group of fifth grade science students from Boardman Center Intermediate School made the trip to the popular Lily Pond in Mill Creek Park. It was all a part of BCIS's first ever Bio Blitz, that took the classroom outdoors for some hands-on learning.

The Bio Blitz began in the classroom as students from the science classes of Megan Turillo, Scott Lenhart and Laura Frost got a special visit from Josh Boyle from the Environmental Collaborative of Ohio. Boyle prepared the students for doing field work during the Bio Blitz.

On the trip, the students walked around the Lily Pond and down the trails surrounding it. They used iPads to record and photograph what they found, and later were able to post those findings on iNaturalist. Once posted on that website, the students' findings are available to thousands of other naturalists who can respond and discuss what was found.

"We hope this is something we can repeat, year after year, with our fifth graders," said Turillo. "This kind of field trip provides great hands-on opportunities, and the kids can track their results, and make observations about a place that's close to home. It's not only learning, but it's also about having an impact."

Turillo's class and a small group from Team Boardman are the pilot group for the project. The hope is to extend the experience to the entire fifth grade next year, who will then work alongside next year's seventh and eighth graders from BGJHS.

As for funding the venture, Turillo said she was thankful to Boardman Subaru for sponsoring the opportunity.

"It's an experience that's sure to ignite the young scientist in every student," she said.
