Music students get special honor

April 3, 2019
The Town Crier

Austintown Middle School Band Director Jeremy McClaine announced that this year, 19 of Austintown Middle School band students and one choir student participated in the OMEA District V Jr High Solo and Ensemble competition on March 30. This experience provided the students with enrichment to develop in their musical skills, confidence, solo and small group performance experience, and exposure to various types of repertoire (specifically solo work and chamber music that they usually do not encounter in the larger ensemble). For the first time, this spring the Middle School Music Program will also host a greater celebration in the community and among their musical department to acknowledge the dedication these students put forth toward in the OMEA competition. On April 10 at 7 p.m. in the Austintown Middle School cafetorium, they will hold a Middle School Solo and Ensemble Recital Night featuring students of the AMS Bands and Choir, AMS Falcon Chorale, select Fitch Band ensembles, in addition to performances by the music department's faculty including Megan Keown, Jeremy McClaine, and Bill Klein.

The goal of the Austintown music educators is to bring a greater unity to the music department by joining various ensembles in this concert. It will provide middle school students with an opportunity to demonstrate their musicianship to a wider audience and diversify their musical experience by observing the performances of their peers, especially those in ensembles other than their own.

McClaine said, "This recital night is a new initiative, and we hope the community comes out to support our young musicians. They have worked incredibly hard on their solo and ensemble pieces. It's going to be a great concert!" Admission will be free for this event and refreshments will be provided.
