Boardman Township seeks input through zoning code survey

March 6, 2019
J.T. Whitehouse , The Town Crier

Boardman Township Zoning Department is doing another online survey in order to gain input into a Zoning Code update. The intent is to allow residents to have input in what they would like to see.

"Data from the survey will be used to guide the new code," said Director of Zoning and Development Krista Beniston. "We will also be having additional public meetings once we have a draft document."

The topics in this recent survey came from a consultant, Zoning Dept. staff members, and from concerns from the first public meeting held last August when the project was kicked off.

The survey was up for two weeks, ending on March 4, but comments are still being accepted on the website www.buildingabetterboardman.com, or by email to the Zoning Department.

"We are also going to be have another public meeting when we have a draft of the code," Beniston said. "This will be in addition to the public meetings which are part of the adoption process."

Among the topics on this survey is storage of boats and RVs.

"The current regulation allows up to 20-foot campers/trailers/boats to be stored in the driveway from May 1 to Oct. 1 now," she said. "Then they would need to be stored in the rear yard on a hard surface. So we do allow that with conditions now. What were are trying to determine is if the current regulation is adequate, should be broader or should be more restrictive."

The last survey that was conducted was for a different purpose. Beniston said it was for the Comprehensive Plan-Building a Better Boardman program. That survey saw 618 responses.

The present survey is specifically to get input for a Zoning Code rewrite.

"At this point we already have over 500, so it's doing very well and we are excited about how many people are interested and engaged in the Community," Beniston said.

A draft section will be placed on the Building a Better Boardman site once it is created and people can also give comments there as well and view the results of this survey.
