Austintown Bands host annual spaghetti dinner on Feb. 23

February 20, 2019
The Town Crier

On Feb. 23, the Austintown Band Parents will host its annual spaghetti dinner to raise funds to support the Austintown Band program.

The Austintown Band Parents trace their written history back to World War II when the organization first started a newspaper drive to help purchase the first uniforms for the Austintown Band. Although times have changed, the organization itself has stayed the same in its mission "to enhance the educational development of Austintown Local School Students through participation in instrumental education and activities associated therewith." This support takes many forms, both financially and logistically, as the Band Parents continue to provide the funds to purchase uniforms, instruments, and anything else that is needed to ensure that the students' lives can be enriched through music education.

As the organization has evolved, many of the Austintown Band Parents' fundraisers have revolved around good food and good company. Besides running concession stands during all the home football games, the Band Parents organize annual fundraisers, including DiRusso Sausage sales, fruit sales, Handel's Nights and gift card sales, Gardner Pie sales, and many more. Beyond fundraisers, the Austintown Band Parents also host a number of community events. For example, in November, the Band Parents hosted the annual Veteran's Day Chili Cookoff and Concert; and in January, the Band Parents hosted the annual Jazz and Desserts event, featuring the middle school, high school, and alumni jazz bands.

Austintown Band Parents volunteers Tracie Kaglic, Jen Agnone, Holly Higginbottham and Robin Pope pitch in to serve up some spaghetti dinners during the annual fundraiser for the Austintown Band program.

But for well over six decades (and predating the current Austintown Fitch building built in 1969), the annual Spaghetti Dinner has been the band program's biggest annual fundraiser as it typically raises between $7,000 and $10,000 in a single day, depending on turnout. The money that this event raises is one reason that the program is able to maintain its excellence from year to year.

At the event, patrons will have the chance to enter a 50/50 raffle and to participate in the annual Chinese Auction. Last year's Chinese auction featured well over 100 baskets. This is not by accident. This year, participants of the Chinese auction will have the opportunity to win a stay at Mountaineer and other great prizes.

As has been the case since the "new" Austintown Fitch High School opened in 1969, this year's event will be hosted in the Austintown Fitch High School Cafeteria, located at 4560 Falcon Drive, Austintown, Ohio 44515. The Austintown Bands from fifth grade all the way through 12th grade will each perform. The Fitch Freshman Band will play at 12 p.m., the Fitch Concert Band will play at 12:30 p.m., Fitch Jazz 2 will play at 1 p.m., Fitch Jazz 1 will play at 1:30 p.m., the Fitch Symphonic Band will play at 2 p.m., the AIS 5th Grade Band will play at 3:30 p.m., the AMS 6th Grade Band will play at 4:15 p.m., the AMS Jazz Band will play at 5 p.m., the AMS 7th Grade Band will play at 5:45 p.m., and the AMS 8th Grade Band will close out the evening at 6:30 p.m.

The cost of admission plus dinner is $8 for adults, $5 for senior citizens and students, and free for children under the age of 4. The cost of admission without dinner is $3 for adults, seniors, and students. Children under the age of 4 get to enjoy the music for free.

Take-out orders are also available.
