Rotary distribues dictionaries to AIS

November 28, 2018
The Town Crier

Rotarians from Austintown visited Austintown Intermediate School to distribute dictionaries to all third graders as part of an annual project going back almost 20 years. Fifteen classrooms were visited, including those of two teachers who had received their own dictionary from Rotarians at Woodside School many years ago. Pictured above are Rotarians Mark Cole and Rich Begalla, while others helping were Pam Raidel, Melissa Crowley, Ron Carroll and Gary Reel.

A visitor from YSU presented an explanation of the Literacy Center, which brings real authors to speak to schools, prisoners, and adult learning sites. Dr. Phil Brady mentioned East, Chaney, Youngstown Early College, Choffin Vocational schools as well as the Warren YWCA and local prisons as recipients of the chance to write and publish their own materials through the Diversity Outreach Program, in cooperation with the Etruscan Press. Brady was part of a Rotary Group Exchange to Nigeria in 1994, and told stories of the great interest generated by the program among students and adults.
