Poland Middle School students post the positive

November 7, 2018

Members of the Poland Middle School's Kindness Club had a busy week recently as they peppered the school's lockers with Post-it notes. It is all part of a program to start everyone off on a positive note.

"We have been placing positive Post-it notes on the students' lockers during either Start With Hello Week or Red Ribbon Week for the past three years," said school counselor Mary Jo Rowan. "It is a way to brighten the students' days and start with something positive."

Each Post-it note is hand-written by members of the Kindness Club at the school.

Bella Beight places Post-it notes on lockers at Poland Middle School as part of a Kindness Club project.

"The Kindness Club is a group of students in grades six, seven and eight who meet once or twice a month to create kind acts for our Poland School and Community," Rowan said. "Some of the projects we do are the sticky notes on the lockers, thank you letters to the teachers, Thanksgiving Cards to community members who may be "shut-in" or unable to leave their homes for the holidays, holiday cards for Sunrise Nursing Home, tie-knot blankets for Beattitude House in Youngstown, and "goodie" bags and cards for sick children at Akron children's Hospital."

She said the Kindness Club is an afterschool program that meets once or twice a month on a Monday from 2:15 to 3:15 p.m. Members are always looking to be a positive force in the school and the post-it notes is just one way to accomplish that goal.

"The students in Kindness Club create the positive post-it sticky notes," Rowan said. "Sometimes they create messages of their own or they may use inspirational quotes for messages."

The Kindness Club members recently wrote out positive quote and message sticky notes for every students' locker in grades five through eight. They then used magnetic tape to tape these messages onto their lockers so that they can keep these positive messages for a pick me up whenever they need it.
