Some students are getting a head start on learning thanks to the United Way's Success by 6 Program. Success by 6 started at Union Elementary on Monday, July 23 and wraps up on August 16. Fifteen students are a part of this year's session.

"Success by 6 provides some of our incoming kindergartners with a sense of what a typical day of school will be like," said Mike Masucci, Principal, Union Elementary. "It's so important for a child to feel good about waking up and going to school. This program is a great way to get students excited about the start of the year."

Success by 6 is a pre-kindergarten readiness program that focuses on academics and social emotional development to make sure students ready for kindergarten.

"The students who go through Success By 6 typically show a 13 point increase from their pre to post literacy test," said Roxann Sebest, Director of Marketing Communication, United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley. "Last year, nearly all the parents surveyed believe their child is more prepared to enter kindergarten."

Parents were invited to the final day of Success by 6, which was August 16. Student had their final session, which started at 8:30 a.m. Parents were invited to the school for the final session as well. Every student in Success by 6 received a backpack filled with school supplies. Kathy Mock, the Community Impact Manager with the United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley, was at the event.
