Golf outing brings in over $30k for United Way

Two local businessmen helped raise $31,061 for the United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley. Leo Henry, Director of Operations for The Muransky Companies, and Bob Conger, COO of Winkle Electric Co. Inc., co-hosted their Fourth Annual Leo and Conger Locker 1 and 2 Golf outing for the United Way. The event was held June 18 at The Lake Club in Poland.

"Leo and I brainstormed for some time on how we could best give back to the community, which led us to talk to our good friend Bob Hannon who suggested a golf outing for the United Way. The outpouring of support has been unbelievable and frankly humbling," said Bob Conger, COO of Winkle Electric Co., Inc. "This isn't your typical golf outing. In addition to playing 18 holes of golf at the beautiful Lake Club, we also have a lot of activities on the course to keep everyone entertained."

Henry and Conger started the outing in 2014 and raised $16,000. Over the past four years, the two men dedicated their time to increase the awareness of the outing and the United Way. This year, a sellout field of 36 teams helped them almost double the donation from the inaugural outing.

"What we like about the United Way is the contribution can be earmarked by Leo and me, and it all stays local in our community." said Conger.

The money raised will be used for United Way's Success After 6 program, specifically the Vision program for the upcoming 2018-2019 school year. This will allow more than 2,000 students in Youngstown and Liberty go through vision screenings. Then the students who need it will receive additional eye exams and be fitted for eye glasses if necessary. In 2017, the students who received eye glasses through this collaboration of several key businesses, medical groups, and the schools showed improved scores on their assessments, increased attendance rates, and decreased behavioral incidents.

"Leo and Bob are great supporters of the United Way, and they want to make sure they raise as much as they can to help us," said Bob Hannon, United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley President. "We cannot do the work alone, and we need business leaders like them to step up and help out. Locker 1 and 2 is a fun way to give back to our neighbors in need."

This outing was made possible by the sponsors, including The Muransky Companies and Winkle Electric Co., Inc. as well as Window World, Hometown Pharmacy, Cinnabon, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, New Castle School of Trades, Bob Simerlink, Brian Smaldino, Steve Sullivan, and Ed Wojochowski. Special thanks to these companies and organizations for their support: Showtyme Exhibits and Party Rentals, V2 Downtown Youngstown and Vernon's Cafe, Aqua Pazzo, Casals de Spa and Brandy Lynn and Michael Simon.
