Chocolate lovers may have won the Willie Wonka golden ticket, but at the Mahoning Valley Olde Car Club's Cars in the Park show on Sunday, it was all about the golden rock. MVOCC members hid a golden rock every hour and whoever found it received a nice car plaque from the show. The first winner of the award was Nancy Hank from Alliance, who has brought her 1957 Thunderbird Junior to the show for well over two decades. Hank is picture receiving the award from MVOCC member Ed Zedeker of Hubbard as her friend Howdy Friend of Boardman is all smiles.
Boardman Little Spartan cheerleader, Leniesia Daley, 10, attended the Mahoning Valley Olde Car Club's Cars in the Park show on Sunday to help out. The cheerleaders went around the car show with a bucket to collect funds for the car show's recipient, four-year-old Nora Sabella of Poland who suffers from Stage 4 high-risk Neuroblastoma cancer. Nora and her mother couldn't attend the car show as Nora was undergoing her next round of surgery. The money the Boardman cheerleaders collected along with show proceeds went to help cover Nora's medical expenses.
Among the classic car owners at this year's Cars in the Park show on Sunday was Dave Lavrock of Boardman with his 1930 Ford Model A Coupe. Lavrock said he purchased the vehicle from a museum in Illinois that had the car on display for a long time. After putting in some mechanical work, Lavrock got the vintage Ford up and running again and back on the road.
Among the many Boardman car owners at this year's MVOCC Cars in the Park car show was Eliud Cruz with his 1967 Buick Riviera Sports Coupe. Cruz said he is the second owner of the car, which was purchased new in 1967 by a close friend. “I bought it from my friend in 1972 for $1,300.” When he bought it, the car became the family vehicle and was used for trips to Florida and the east coast. Later it was stored until 2013, when it underwent a soft restoration. The mint Buick has 88,000 original miles on it and had just won “Best of Show” at a car show last month.
