Poland students supporting endangered species

Poland High School students were asked last week to adopt an animal by making contributions towards efforts to save a species.

"For Green Week, on April 18 and 19, students collected donations, by class, to support World Wildlife Fund's wildlife preservation efforts," said science teacher Beth Queen. "Each class has a symbolic adopted animal and the collections are done at a table at lunch."

The effort is one that senior Katie Donnachie got behind. She said each class had a specific animal, including the staff. The freshmen were donating to save the sea otter, sophomores had the giraffe, juniors took on the polar bear, seniors had the penguin, and the high school staff donated to save the gorilla.

Reaching for a donation are Poland seniors Meredith Lea and Jenna Deluca as Mark Pompeo and Katie Donnachie make their rounds at lunch at Poland High School. Donnachie is collected for the wildlife that has no voice.

"These are all endangered species because of us," Donnachie said.

She said biologists are saying half of the wildlife could go extinct by 2050 if steps are not taken soon. That prompted the students in the science class to take action by raising funds to help endangered species.

Donnachie said she is raising funds for the World Wildlife Fund. The money raised will go to help protect the five animals the school is raising funds for.

Each grade and the staff are being totaled separately, almost making it a little competition.

"So far the seniors are doing the best," she said on Thursday last week.

She is also heading the recycling drive that is doing well too.

Students created informational posters and placed them around the school, giving data on climate change and habitat destruction.

Over the weekend, a lot of the students pitched in with the annual mustard pull at Poland Woods as they wrapped up Green Week at Poland Seminary High School.
