Poland Girls Soccer stand-out Rabekah Thomas signed her letter of intent on March 20 to continue her soccer career at Heidelberg University this fall. For the PSHS senior, it will be the continuation of a long soccer career.

"Rabekah started playing soccer at age four," said her mother Teri Thomas. "She played with Boardman Youth Soccer and at age seven went into the Boardman Travel Team."

When she entered the fifth grade she switched over to the Poland soccer travel team, and continued right through high school. Besides the Poland varsity team, Thomas also is part of the L.C. Select Club Team out of New Castle.

Rabekah Thomas and her parents Andrew and Teri Thomas were joined by Poland Athletic Director Brian Banfield and former Poland Varsity Soccer Head Coach John Cavalier during Rabekah's official signing with Heidelberg University where she will continue her soccer career.

"Her older brother Jacob played soccer and Rabekah has been around it all her life," Teri Thomas said.

This year she is also running track for Poland.

Other pastimes include being a member of the drama club, band and choir. It is a short list that lends to the fact Rabekah is very devoted to her soccer passion.

At last week's signing, past Poland Head Coach John Cavalier attended and spoke highly of Thomas. The signing was Cavalier's final task as head coach. He will be stepping down from that position, but will be continuing as a volunteer assistant coach.

"I have coached Rabekah for four years," Cavalier said. "She has been a dedicated player since day one. Very seldom do you find an athlete that totally devotes herself to one sport. She was a great leader and I am honored to attend this as my last official duty as head coach of the Poland girls' soccer team."

Cavalier said in the past year, Thomas had nine goals and ten assists.

As for Thomas' choice of colleges, she was looking for one that fit her desire to pursue a pre-med degree.

"Heidelberg had a home-like feeling and they made me feel at home," she said.

She also noted the school's academics were great as well as having a strong soccer team.
