Boardman swimmers making a colorful splash

The Boardman Boys and Girls Swim Teams are enjoying another record breaking year, winning the Northeast Aquatic Conference in Wooster Jan. 6 as well as the AAC Conference at Warren Harding earlier this month.

The teams are determined to keep that winning streak going. On Sunday, Jan 21, at Ralph and Friends Salon on Market Street, the entire boys swim and dive teams participated in the traditional "Hair Dye." They picked a brazen and brassy blond to serve as a way to unite the team in the next two weeks leading up to the State Sectional Meet.

The girls team was a bit more subtle, deciding on red streaks or highlights as part of the hair dye tradition.

Before and after the annual hair dye before the final weeks leading to the state tournament are Boardman swimers, in front: Brendan Beam, Stephen Vasko, Teddy Anzevino, Egan Hare, Brendan Rutledge, and Andy Beichner. In back are: Kyle Kimerer, Callen Auluzia, Jordyn Stackpole, Jacob Thomas, Mason Rassega, Will Linker, Simon Mascola, David Giancola, Noah Basista, and Mathew Dunlany.

"While bright hair doesn't make them swim faster, it is tradition, and they don't want anything to break the streak they're having," said Coach Terry O'Halloran. "Boardman has a history of strong swim teams, and I would call this year's teams among our strongest yet."

Two days later, the Spartan Swim and Dive teams split at Shaker Heights. The Spartan boys' team has seven wins and two losses in dual meet competition while the girls' team stands at six and three. Boardman has two more meets to finish out the dual meet season before the Canton Sectional Championships on Feb. 10. On Tuesday, Jan. 23 the Spartan seniors and parents were honored at YSU's Beeghly Natatorium before the meet against Poland. On Friday the Spartan swimmers and divers concluded the dual meet season against North Canton Glenoak at C. T. Branin Natatorium.

The Canton Sectionals will be held at C. T. Branin Natatorium in Canton on Saturday, Feb. 10. The swimming competition begins at 9 a.m. The diving sectionals will be held at Akron University's Ocasek Natatorium. The girls diving is Wednesday, Feb. 7 at 6 p.m. while the boys diving is Thursday, Feb. 8 at 6 p.m. at Akron University. The Spartans traveled to Shaker Heights on Jan. 20. The girls lost to Shaker by the score of 97 to 89. The Spartans downed the Shaker boys by the score of 102-81. Junior Mikel Flatley was a double winner in her two individual events.
