Canfield students honored for test taking

January 11, 2018
J.T. Whitehouse , The Town Crier

Canfield students were honored at the Jan. 2 meeting of American Legion Post 177 for their participation in the Americanism and Government program. The program is a test administered in November that tests the knowledge a student has regarding federal, state, county, and local government, the U.S. flag, U.S. Constitution, and the Declaration of Independence.

According to Post 177 Commander Mike Kubitza, the test consists of 50questions and is offered to sophomores, juniors and seniors. Each American Legion Post then selects the top six finishers whose test scores go up against other posts in the district. The top winners at district goes on to state, where the top six in each grade level (18 total) will earn an all-expense paid trip to Washington D.C. In March.

Those selected as local Post winners and honored at the meeting included Canfield High School students Michael Factor, Drew Scalzo, Libby Finsen, Ethan Morrison, Michael Dascenzo, and Boardman High School student Luke Hetzel.

Of the Post 177 winners, none made it past the district level.

"We thank all the students that took the test," Kubitza said. "We also thank the high schools for providing the test for students who wanted to take it."

Both Boardman and Canfield high schools were honored by proclamation at the Post meeting also.
