On May 25, Poland senior Emily Melnek signed her letter of intent to continue her basketball career at Geneva Collage this fall. She was joined by school officials and the Poland girls basketball team and coaches for the event.

Melnek started playing team basketball in the second grade. She loved the game and stuck with it. In seventh grade, up to her sophomore year, she also became a member of the cross country team.

"It helped me stay conditioned," she said.

Her love for basketball also saw her become a member of the Ohio Lakers travel team, which she started with in the fifth grade and continued to her junior year at Poland. But it was with the Poland High School team she became an important part of the glue that made the team such a tight-knit family.

"She brought a lot more to the table than just basketball," said Poland head coach Nick Blanch. "She did a lot for the team outside the courts, by hosting parties and get-togethers, making for a true sports family."

That atmosphere was a two-way street and Melnek's father Mark Melnek said he too is appreciative.

"I really appreciate the support of her team and coaches all through her [basketball] career," Mark said.

As for Melnek's choice in colleges, she said Geneva is a good fit.

"Geneva has a beautiful campus and the team is welcoming and very family oriented," she said. "Some of my travel team teammates are going to lay there as well."

She plans to major in physical therapy as she is looking at a career in sports down the road.
