Dr. Ralph Pfingsten will speak on the Mahoning Valley's contributions to the World War II supply effort Monday at the World War II Heritage Group meeting.
Pfingsten, a historian and author of "The History of the Ravenna Arsenal," will share his knowledge of how the area armed its forces.
In less than 10 months, farmland the size of Youngstown was converted into a munitions factory employing thousands of workers. Pfingsten will cover its history from inception to its present uses.
Pfingstgten will have his book for sale at the meeting, 340 pages of history with more than 900 photographs and illustrations. Autographed copies also will be available.
Pfingsten worked as a secondary school teacher at Cleveland schools while obtaining a Bachelor of Science from Wittenberg University and a Master of Art from Kent State University.
He is an acclaimed field biologist / herpetologist who has collected more than 15,000 amphibian and reptile records throughout Ohio. It was his love of his field and history that coincided in obtaining the privilege of surveying the Ravenna Arsenal area for the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.
He also is an expert on the railroads of this area and their importance to the arsenal.
