Livestock project to benefit Second Harvest Food Bank

There will be a Canfield Fair livestock auction / sale in the 4-H coliseum, building #8, where a company or organization may purchase livestock to donate to Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley for distribution to the hungry families in Mahoning, Columbiana and Trumbull counties.

Livestock available for donation to the food bank include market beef, hogs, poultry-broilers, turkeys, goats and lambs.

The auction / sale are on the following dates and times:

* Aug. 28

5:30 p.m. -- Goat Milk Fudge

Market goats

Market rabbits

7 p.m. -- Market lambs

Carcass lambs

* Aug. 29

5:30 p.m. -- Market poultry -- broilers and turkeys

7 p.m. -- Market beef

Market feeders

Market hogs

Livestock purchases to be donated to the food bank will be processed by Chamberlain Farms and Pleasant Valley Poultry. Processing fees will be added to the purchase price (market beef will be 36 cents; hogs will be 51 cents; lambs and goats will be $1.21; poultry per pen is $7 and turkeys $14). Mastercard, Visa, personal check and cash will be accepted. All donations are tax deductible as allowed by law.

Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley, a member of Feeding America, distributes food to 153 hunger relief organizations in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties. These organizations include church pantries, homeless shelters and soup kitchens, shelters for battered women and after-school programs.

In 2013, Second Harvest Food Bank was awarded the AIB Food Safety Certification for handling, storage and distribution of dry goods, canned good, fresh fruits and vegetables, dairy and frozen meats.
