This year, DiRusso's Real Italian Sausage concessions will be celebrating its 50th year selling its famous Italian sausage sandwiches at the Canfield Fair.
DiRusso's Sausage has been a favorite of fairgoers since 1964, when Augustine ''Augie'' DiRusso started his concession business.
His mother, Adeline DiRusso, was the originator of DiRusso's sausage recipe. Upon Augie's retirement in 1993, Robert DiRusso, his nephew, purchased the manufacturing business, which is located in Youngstown.
Robert, who was raised and lives in Canfield, has never missed attending the Canfield Fair and at the age of 12 started working in DiRusso's trailers. With his brothers, David and Larry, he worked and operated DiRusso's Sausage trailers throughout high school and college. Robert has managed the trailer operations at the Canfield Fair for over 30 years.
In 2000, DiRusso's introduced its popular Turkey Italian Sausage at the fair, which is available at the Wetmore Drive and Boardman Street concession stands. Also, DiRusso's Sausage is proud to be a 30-year sponsor of the Rooster Crowing contest; the fruit, hay and grain building; and for donating a parking lot Courtesy Pavilion.
DiRusso's Sausage would like to thank all its customers who have patronized the concession stands at the Canfield Fair and all the past and present employees who have made it all possible for the past 50 years.
