Special to the Town Crier
The Global War on Terror Wall of Remembrance will be featured at the Mahoning Veterans Memorial during this year's Canfield Fair.
The Wall of Remembrance was inspired by the three factors, a wish by active duty military for a memorial, the cowardly acts of terrorists on Sept. 11, 2001, and Vietnam veterans.
The memorial was designed, built and funded by U.S. Marine David Brown and founder Richard ''JR'' Nichols in 2011 for the 10-year remembrance of 9/11. It was built to be displayed once, but due to the reaction, they both agreed to find a way to travel it around America.
In 2012, JR found the perfect person to drive the memorial around the country when he was at the eighth official stop at the Easyrider Bike Show in Anaheim. U.S. Marine Derek Hendershot accepted the challenge and agreed to drive after his college graduation.
Through local fundraising efforts and AMVETS of California, JR and Derek hit the road in July 2013 and covered 10,000 miles. See some of the stories on Facebook or look at them under the TOUR TALK section.
