The Mill Creek MetroParks Farm in Canfield experienced an infiltration of bugs on Aug. 3. It was the park's Bug Day event that showcased the insect world for children and families.

''It started in 1992,'' said Mill Creek MetroParks naturalist Ray Novotny. ''It runs every other year, opposite our reptile exhibit.''

The Bug Day program is geared towards families with a wide array of bug-related activities. Upon entering the visitor's center at the farm, children received a Bug Day event card that listed nine different stations including Bug Bingo, micro bugs, honey harvest (bees), bug exhibits, bug races, bug stories, bug crafts, bug fun, and bug hunts out on the farm.

Finn and Luke Houck of Boardman check out the bee hive at the Mill Creek MetroParks' Bug Day event on Sunday. They learned about the bees from bee keeper and park volunteer Don Kovach.

The youths needed to attended six of the nine events. They got their event card punched after completing each station. Once they had enough, they returned to the entrance and received their Master of Bugology certificate.

The event drew kids from all over Ohio. Daniel and Rebekah Davenport came from Blanchester near Columbus. They attended the event with their grandfather, Tim Dove from Canfield. Conor and Jack Sutton came from Hudson and attended the event with their grandmother, Della McPherson from Poland.

From Boardman, twins Finn and Luke Houck and their father, Jim Houck, enjoyed the bee exhibit that showcased a swarm and queen bee in a hive. The bee station was staffed by volunteer Don Kovach from the Columbiana-Mahoning County Bee Keepers Association.

Kovach said his organization works with the park system to continue an education program.

''We take care of four hives at Fellows Riverside Gardens as part of an educational program,'' Kovach said.
