Mahoning County Sheriff Jerry Green's senior services unit will present a program event to benefit the seniors of the county from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Emmanuel Community Church, 6512 Kirk Road, Canfield.
''We have all kinds of 'free' things to give away, but the most important freebie is the information that will help our seniors make 'informed decisions' when they are presented with unforeseen issues,'' said Kay Lavelle, coordinator of the senior service unit. ''At that point in time, it is not smart to take the first thing you see, because those decisions can affect the rest of their lives and sometimes are not easy to change.''
Besides valuable information, the event also will include free food, music and entertainment.
''We are also going to have a large display of animals that need adopted,'' Lavelle said. ''The Mahoning County Dog Warden, Animal Charity and Angels for Animals will be out with dogs and cats that need homes, and we will be taking applications for adoptive parents. The sheriff's unit is in partnership with a local service provider that will pay the adoption fee if the senior meets the rescue organizations requirements so that we can place an animal in need of a home with a senior in need of companionship.''
