Field renamed in honor of MLB umpire

July 24, 2014
The Town Crier

Because of his volunteer work with different organizations in lending his talent, time, money and support, it was proposed by Todd Shaffer, Austintown Township Park supervisor, to rename ball field no. 1 the Wally Bell Baseball Field.

Bell, a veteran umpire with 21 years of Major League Baseball experience, died of a heart attack in 2013 at the age of 48 in his hometown of Youngstown. He was a graduate of Austintown Fitch High School.

The trustees passed a motion for the action, and dedication will take place 10 a.m. Saturday at the park.

The keynote speaker will be Major League umpire John Hirschbeck. There will be introductions and remarks by family members and friends.

The public is cordially invited to participate in this momentous occasion. For more information, contact Shaffer at 330-793-0718.
