The Church of Jesus Christ, 185 N. Canfield-Niles Road in Austintown, is bagging up some needed community help this month. Church members are putting together close to 100 book bags to help kindergarteners get a good start in school.
''We are holding a book bag give-away for Austintown kindergarten students who are in need, said the churchs outreach coordinator, Dina Rine. ''Any family with a kindergartener, who is having a tough time of it, can come and get the book bags.''
She said the book bags are filled with the materials kindergarteners will need for their first year of school. The church coordinated with the school district to find out what the kindergarteners had to bring to school, and then purchased those supplies for the book bags.
Funding for the program come from donations made within the church membership and from outreach funds set aside for helping others. The church will also hold a community bake sale from 2 to 8 p.m. July 31 at the Austintown Wal-Mart. The bake sale also will help fund the book bags.
''We believe it is the church's job to serve the community and those who are in need,'' Rine said.
On Aug. 16, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the book bags will be given out to the kindergartners so they will be ready for their first year of school in Austintown. While the church is hoping to have enough book bags to go around, they have set up a system for needy families to reserve one for their child. Rine said they can call the church at 330-533-6615 to reserve one.
''We know there are a lot of families in Austintown who are struggling to make ends meet. This program is for them, so their child will have a good start in public school," Rine said.
