Golf outing helps alumni in need

June 12, 2014
The Town Crier

The third annual Fitch '76 & Friends Golf Outing is scheduled for Aug. 24 at Lakeside Golf Course, 2404 S.E. River Road in Lake Milton.

The event, in conjunction with Muscular Dystrophy Association, supports Austintown Fitch alumni and friends in need as well as Austintown children afflicted with muscular dystrophy.

The concept for Fitch '76 & Friends was established four years ago when several members of the Austintown Fitch Class of '76 learned of a fellow classmate's cancer battle and were inspired to raise funds and donate the proceeds .

The overwhelming response to that initial fund-raising effort motivated the group to further their philanthropic work by creating an annual charitable golf outing to ensure certain Austintown residents and alumni receive assistance and support in times of need. This summer, while still maintaining the focus on Austintown Fitch alumni and friends, the group's generous and diligent effort will additionally sponsor three Austintown children afflicted by neuromuscular disease to attend Camp Cheerful in Strongsville.

This golf outing will ''bring the entire Austintown community together,'' indicated lifelong Austintown resident, Fitch '76 alumnus and current UAW Local 1112 President Glenn Johnson.

Johnson, like many others in the community, expects the monies raised and disbursed by this event to ''provide an emotional impact on the lives of some of our alumni, allow for more area children to attend Camp Cheerful in the future and fund research grants at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation.'' The golf outing is the primary source of contribution into the charitable fund.

To continue the funding, the entire community is invited to join the 9 a.m. four-person scramble-shotgun start on Aug. 24. For $65, golfers will receive 18 holes of golf with cart and skins, morning coffee and donuts, and lunch and beverages at the turn and dinner (provided by Barry Dyngles). Awards for winning team, 50/50 putting contest and best score will be presented and prizes such as a big screen television and gift cards from area restaurants and businesses will be auctioned in a raffle following golf.

Golfers are encouraged to reserve their spots as soon as possible due to the limited number of spaces available. Golfers may contact Nick Harris at 330-509-4717.

Area businesses and organizations are also encouraged to take an active role in supporting this worthwhile endeavor in the form of tax-deductible sponsorships and donations by contacting Louis Markulin at 216-272-4459.

Anyone unable to attend the golf outing or make a corporate donation may contribute a monetary gift to Austintown Fitch Class of '76 & Friends, c/o Bernie Benyak, 220 S. Edgehill Ave., Youngstown, OH 44515.
