In the regular session of the Austintown Board of Education at 1 p.m. Tuesday, the board unanimously voted on a resolution of intent to consider the termination of Fitch social studies teacher John Dietz. The grounds for the termination include alleged instances of inappropriate texts and engaging in inappropriate conversations with five female high school students.

Superintendent Vince Colaluca said the intent to terminate resolution is the first step in the process.

''There was misconduct by Mr. Dietz, but he will have the right to defend himself, Colaluca said.

He said the incident happened over the winter months. One of the five students brought the incident to another teacher who then brought it to the Board of Education.

''The incident was sent to Austintown Police for investigation,'' Colaluca said. ''We take any allegations very seriously. Student safety is first and foremost.''

He said Dietz will have 10 days to respond to the Board of Education and request a hearing so he may present a defense. Dietz will remain suspended from all duties during the pendency of the termination proceedings.

Colaluca said he and board members could not give any specific details, but he did say Dietz was a teacher in the Austintown School District for the past eight years.
