The Mahoning and Shenango Valleys Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America (MSVS-MOAA) heard from two guest speakers at the organization's recent meeting at the Youngstown Air Reserve Station in Vienna. The first guest speaker was Dan Madden from Becker Funeral Home. He highlighted various assistance programs available to veterans and their families from the Veterans Administration and from state and county agencies.
Madden focused on the types of assistance funeral homes can provide for families of veterans from providing pre-planned programs to Military Honor Guards and burial at a national cemetery. During the meeting, Chapter members received a Personal Affairs Action Guide from MOAA and a legal and financial guide when a loved one dies from The USAA Educational Foundation.
The second speaker was Susan E. Skrzynski, executive director and service officer of the Mahoning County Veterans Service Commission. Skrzynski spoke on some of the many services the Veterans Service Commission provides to honorably discharged veterans, their families and surviving spouses of Mahoning County who have met with an unexpected hardship resulting from illness or injury, or who have become destitute due to lack of employment. Besides financial assistance, the VSC provides assistance with utilities, burials, transportation, VA claims, nursing homes, and obtaining veteran benefits provided by the State of Ohio. More information can be obtained by calling the Mahoning County Veterans Service Commission at 330-740-2450, or the Trumbull County Veterans Service Commission at 330-675-2586.
