White and Shanks to exchange vows

The parents of Dr. John Shanks and Sarah Cathryn White, both of Northport, Ala., are announcing their engagement and upcoming wedding on June 8, 2014, in Birmingham, Ala.

Dr. Shanks is the son of Edward and Sharon Shanks of Boardman and the grandson of Madeline Shanks of Poland. Miss White is the daughter of Sarah and Richard White of Bessemer, Ala.

A 2001 graduate of Boardman High School, Dr. Shanks received a music performance degree from Youngstown State University in 2006, a master's of music degree from Indiana University in 2008, and the degree of doctor of musical arts from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa in 2014. He is principal trombone at the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra and instructs trombone at Jackson State University in Jackson, Miss.

Miss White, a flautist, will receive her bachelor's degree in music with a minor in business from the University of Alabama in August. She is employed as a flute teacher at Scrollworks in Birmingham, an elementary music teacher for Tuscaloosa's One Place, and an assistant at the University of Alabama Community Music School.

Invitations have been issued for an afternoon garden wedding and reception at Aldridge Botanical Gardens in Birmingham. Invitations also will be sent for a local reception hosted by the groom's parents from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, June 21, at Scholl Pavilion in Millcreek Park.
