High school orchestra to present spring concert

The award-winning Boardman High School Symphony, Chamber and Classical orchestras will present their annual Spring Orchestra Concert at 7 p.m. May 21 in the Boardman Performing Arts Center.

Admission for the events are requested donations of $3 for adults and $1 for students. Pre-schoolers and senior citizens admission is free.

The 35-member Classical Orchestra will open the concert. The 40-member Chamber Orchestra, featuring top string players in the BHS Orchestra program, will perform, and senior Megan Deeley will sing the popular song ''Let It Go'' from the movie ''Frozen.''

Boardman high school senior soloist Maddie Smotzer will be among those featured at the annual spring concert.

The 120-member Symphony Orchestra, winner of the ''Overall Best Orchestra'' at the Fiesta-Val Music Competition in Myrtle Beach, S.C., will finish the evening.

Senior soloist Maddie Smotzer will be featured with the group performing the first movement of Edvard Grieg's Piano Concerto in A Minor.

Smotzer is the daughter of Thomas and Cynthia Smotzer. She began taking piano lessons with Suzie Owens and currently studies with Marcelene Hawk-Mayhall. She has been has been a member of the Boardman Orchestra for four years and has participated in both Symphony and Chamber. She received the Most Improved Freshman Award during her freshman year. Smotzer has participated in OMEA Solo and Ensemble Competition and has performed regularly with the Youngstown Symphony Youth Orchestra on violin.

She participated in piano master classes at YSU and Baldwin Wallace. For the past three years, Smoltzer has played keyboard for the Boardman Theater Orchestra, including ''The Phantom of the Opera.'' She also teaches piano and violin.

Smoltzer is involved in National Honor Society, French National Honor Society, French Club, Math Club, and serves as co-head librarian of the Boardman High School Orchestras as well as treasurer. She will attend the Ohio State University this fall, majoring in engineering.

The Boardman Orchestra program is under the direction of Michele Prokop, Bill Amendol and Tim Tuite.
