The BGMS Quiz Bowl Team was honored at last week's Board of Education meeting for placing first in the state in recent competition. The team, called ''The Thinking Cap Quiz Bowl Team'' competed against other middle school teams from across the nation.

Quiz Bowl is an extracurricular activity at BGMS. Members are selected through teacher recommendations and OAA test scores.

''We pick students who excel and we try to balance the subjects,'' said team adviser Barb Fonderlin.

Fonderlin is joined with co-coach Courtney Abruzzino to help the team along.

They would meet with team members during lunch at BGMS, which worked out well.

''The students were eager to give up their lunch period and would eat in the classroom every Wednesday to practice,'' Fonderlin said.

She said in Quiz Bowl, the questions range in topic. Areas covered include English, spelling, math, science, literature, government, geography, current events , sports, and more. Each team is given the opportunity to answer questions based on speed and accuracy.

''The faster you answer the question correctly, the more points you get,'' Fonderlin said.

The team members must answer the questions without the use of reference materials, computers or calculators. The answer has to come from the students knowledge.

The Quiz Bowl itself is all done online via computer. The event is broken down by state, region and the nation when it comes to ranking. The BGMS team ranked first in Ohio, fourth in the region and 17th in the nation.

Although the competition is over, the students are still wanting to meet and continue. Fonderlin said the season is over unless she can locate a local quiz bowl competition to take part in.

All the members of the team are eighth graders. They could all continue in the high school level next year. For the coaches it will be a new team in the fall as BGMS defends its state title.

This year's team competed in two Quiz Bowl events and placed first in the state in both.
