Cassi Calderon, of Poland, was honored as the Mahoning County Medical Society Alliance Gem of the Year and a joint dinner meeting with the Medical Society March 28 at the Blue Wolf Banquet Center.
The Gem of the Year recognizes a member who has served the Medical Alliance and the community with distinction.
Calderon is a per diem pharmacist at Select Specialty Hospital and St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Youngstown. She graduated with a doctorate degree in pharmacy from Campbell University School of Pharmacy in North Carolina and completed a residency in pharmacy practice at The University of Maryland Medical System in Baltimore. She was a Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist.

Calderon has been an active member of the Alliance since 2002. She has served actively on the Alliance board as vice president, president elect and was installed as president in 2010. She has served on many Alliance committees, including the new Member's Luncheon, TWIGS, Officer Installation and the annual Charity Fashion Show. During her tenure the Alliance raised more than $10,000, which was donated to Akron Children's Hospital Mahoning Valley Garden of Hope.
She has been an active member of the Dobbins Elementary PTO and has been assistant Cub Scout leader of her son's den and is currently the Advancement Coordinator for Boy Scout Troop 2. She also is the assistant Girl Scout leader for her daughter's troop, is an active member of Akron Children's Hospital Kids Club and has volunteered many hours supporting the hospital and kids the the Mahoning Valley.
Calderon and her husband, Dr. Javier Calderon have two children, Diego and Gabriella and two dogs, Orion and Lyra.
