The Boardman Board of Education honored the winter sports teams and athletes for another successful season. The students were invited to step forward and received proclamations from the board in honor of their achievements.
Swim Team state qualifiers Brooke Bailey, Jessica Hilk, Sarah Gonda, Jordyn Markovitch, and alternates Corie Kuras and Amanda Moss were given certificates from the board and it was noted that swim coach Terry OHalloran was named Federal League Coach of the Year.
From the bowling team, Jake Wagner was honored for being a state qualifier and finishing 59th.
Sophomore Mario Graziani was honored for becoming a state qualifier in wrestling. Coach Dom Mancini said he is having a great career that saw him place eighth in the state.
''Mario placed fifth at the Top Gun tournament and third at the Josh Hephner,'' Mancini said. ''He is Boardman's first four-time sectional champ and has 75 career wins.''
On the academic side, honors went to the BHS Quiz Bowl team comprised of senior Christopher Leymarie, juniors Megan Banks, Luke Carabbia, Tristan Myers and Michael Palagano, and sophomore Julian Reyes, along with alternates junior Jessica Fox and sophomore Jeremy Large. The team advanced to the finals on March 17 and lost to South Range.

The Stadium Drive Math 24 team of Alexander DePinto, Alee Bosnjak. Taylor Greenaway, Jenna Olexa, Karlynn Riccitelli, and Daniel Zahran also were commended on a good season. In the Mahoning County tournament, DePinto took second, Olexa placed third, and Greenaway finished fourth. DePinto went on to capture second at the regional competition held in Warren.
In other business the board:
* Accepted donations of: $1,500 to Boardman High School Choral Department from Robert and Kristine Fox to purchase a new electronic keyboard and accessories in memory of Russell Fox, BHS graduate; $125 to Market Street Elementary School from Home Savings and Loan Co. to Market Street guidance counselor to help purchase materials for Carey's Closet; and $500 to Stadium Drive Elementary School from the Stadium Drive P.T.A. for the Dr. James Chengelis Memorial Scholarship Fund.
* Approved the creation of a half contract bus driver position to transport Cardinal Mooney students to and from daily classes. Superintendent Frank Lazerri said the transporting is presently being contracted with Transit Services, but providing it within the district will generate an annual savings.
* Approved a 2014 middle school summer school program.
* Heard from Lazerri who said the board the Boardman High School NOSB Team (National Ocean Science Bowl Team) will travel to Seattle, Washington on May 1 to 3 to participate in the National Ocean Science Bowl.
