David Rankin, Austintown Middle School student, is accomplished academically and as an athlete. Rankin began skating at age 5. By the time he was six, David became a member of an organized youth hockey team, the Youngstown Phantoms. He has progressed over the years and has played for several AAA teams. Currently he is the center for the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite AAA team. Rankin travels to Pittsburgh two to three times each week for practice and maintains high marks academically.
'Besides being a great hockey player, he is a model student and does an excellent job in the classroom,' said middle school principal Michael Zoccali.
