Boardman high school junior Jordan Grantonic qualified March 8 to the Indoor State Track and Field Championships for the third straight year of her high school running career.
The State Meet was held at the University of Akron where Jordan earned All-Ohio honors for the first time, placing fifth in the 3200 meter run. Her time of 11:17.60 was an indoor personal best and was a 23 second drop from her previous best time of 11:40 this year. She came in ranked 13th in the race and beat eight other runners to earn All-Ohio honors.
''Jordan has worked extremely hard in her running career, putting in many miles every year to be the best possible runner she can be,'' said head coach Denise Gorski. ''She has been so close to making All-Ohio honors and on this day, she had a major break-through by running tough as usual but also by running one of her best races mentally. Her success is a tribute to how hard she works, her mom and dad who train with her at times, her cross country coach Stacey Hunter and Coach Whitney Resch who is helping us out this year in track while Coach Hunter is on maternity leave. I am just so happy for her as she deserves this honor.''
''I just wanted to run my personal best time and I had hoped I could finish in the top eight,'' Grantonic said. ''Being All-Ohio means I'm improving and gives me confidence for what I can do in the upcoming outdoor season.''
Grantonic averages running 60 miles a week in the summer and is now running 45-50 miles a week heading into the outdoor season. Her goals for this season are to run under 11:00 in the 3200 run, earn Federal League honors and qualify to the outdoor State Meet.
In Grantonic's sophomore year of indoor track, she placed ninth, just missing All-Ohio honors by one place and running 11:39 at the state meet. Her career personal best was 11:34 from last year at the Arnold Classic Meet. In her freshmen year, she qualified to state in the 3200 and placed 16th in her first state competition. In outdoor track Jordan was a regional qualifier in the 3200 as a freshman and as a sophomore was a member of Boardman's school record setting 4 x 1600 meter relay team before losing the last half of the outdoor track season last year to an injury.
Jordan is the daughter of Tom and Karen Grantonic, both avid runners and former high school runners at Boardman and Poland respectively.
