Last week Megan Factor, 17, of Canfield, collected over 150 formal dresses to be donated to DIVA Donations in North Lima. Factor did this as her senior year National Honor Society project for school.
DIVA Donations, run by Kristin Bodendorfer, is the first formal clothing closet in the area and focuses on giving girls a diva experience for school dances. Their slogan, "Because every girl deserves a Cinderella experience," encompasses what they are about. Girls put down a deposit for the dresses and are refunded the majority of the deposit when the dresses are returned. The idea is to help young girls who might not financially be able to afford a dress have a night just like their fellow classmates.
"I have been fortunate enough to be able to get a new dress for each dance, so I wanted to help girls who couldn't. I think every girl should be able to have that one special night to get dressed up and feel great about themselves," Factor said.

Megan Factor, 17, of Canfield, shows off some of the dresses she collected for DIVA Donations in North Lima. Factor collected over 150 dresses as part of her senior year National Honor Society project.
Factor began toying with the idea of collecting dresses her freshmen year. When she was inducted into NHS and knew she would have to complete a community service project, she immediately knew this was what she wanted to do.
"I wanted to incorporate my love for fashion with my project," the senior said.
NHS students attend monthly meetings after being inducted in their junior year. To get into the NHS, students complete at least 48 hours of community service during the first two years of high school. In their junior year, they must write an essay and submit it along with their community service logs, a teacher recommendation and their academic grades to be considered for membership.
Factor is the secretary of the Canfield NHS chapter this year. She is also the president of One Octave Higher choral group and the Drama Club, and is a member of Synergy of the Arts.
"I think it's important to do as much as you can to help out if you are able," Factor said. "The Mahoning Valley is a great area, and growing up here has showed me how important giving back to those less fortunate is."
Factor plans on attending college in the fall for marketing and communications.
