Book Fair extended after bad weather week

February 6, 2014

"Our Scholastic Book Fair was to run the week of Jan. 27-31 and we have been able to extend it to Feb. 7, said Dobbins Elementary School Principal Michael Daley. "The activity room is wall to wall with scholastic displays for grades K-4."

Daley said the original week was cut short when the temperature dipped below zero and caused a two-day school cancellation. That didn't leave a lot of time for students to shop and purchase new reading materials.

The Scholastic book fair is a week-long event held each year at Dobbins and other district schools in Poland. The PTO at the schools handle setting up the displays and taking care of the sales. PTO member Kristin Masucci has been coordinating the event for the past three years and was hard at work Jan. 23 for this year's event. She, with other PTO volunteers transformed the activity room at Dobbins into a mammoth book fair. They were depending on the five days of sales and when school was canceled Tuesday and Wednesday, Masucci and Daley decided to ask for an extension.

Fourth graders Ryan Boano, Ethan Frank, and Dominic Parker can't decide on the best book to buy at the Dobbins Elementary School Book Fair.

"We called Scholastic and explained our situation to them," said Masucci. "They agreed to let us keep the books for an extra week."

She said the book fair is important to the school as it is a fundraiser that is used to purchase books for the school's library.

"We average over $7,000 in sales each year," Masucci said. "It is our only fundraiser to support the school library.

With the extension and the rescheduling of Family Book Fair Night to Feb. 5, the school was able to offer students and families a chance to find that perfect book and continue the support for their school.
