The Boardman Spartans boys cross country team got a community send-off on Thursday morning, Oct. 31, as the seven-member team headed for Columbus and the state finals. They started out the morning with a clap out at the high school, then proceeded with a police and fire escort to Center Middle School where students greeted and cheered the team as the bus drove around the school. The escort the continued to Ohio 11 and the team was off. For head coach John Phillips, it was a first.
"This is my fourth trip to state, but the prior three were for individual qualifiers," he said. "This is the first time since 1990 that we qualified as a team."
Phillips and the team arrived in Columbus on Thursday, then had one day of practice prior to their 3 p.m. race on Saturday. The team will stay over Saturday evening and return home on Sunday.

Fellow cross country teammates Carmen Marinucci and Ryan McKeown were Spartans in more ways than one as they dressed the part and provided an escort through the halls at Boardman High School for the state-bound boys’ team on Thursday morning.
"Hopefully with the championship trophy," Phillips said.
