Nobody has to tell fans of the Boardman football team that the beginning of this 2013 season has been a rough one.
Even though the Spartans have started the season 0-4, all of that bad taste could have been rinsed from their collective mouths with an upset victory over crosstown rival Austintown Fitch. Making that game played Sept. 27 extra special was that it was Hall of Fame night at Spartan Stadium. All of the future inductees into the Boardman Athletic Hall were on hand to hopefully watch their beloved Boardman brethren hand Fitch its first loss of the year. That extraordinary event never happened however. The mighty Falcons defense forced six Spartan turnovers and held Boardman's offense to under 110 total yards in a 27-0 whitewash.
The only semblance of offense from the Spartan side came from quarterback Marcus Smith who ran for 50 yards on 16 carries. A lot of those rush yards, however, came when Smith was scrambling for his life against the ferocious Fitch front seven. Smith was not as successful when throwing the ball as he was held to just 11 yards through the air with one interception. Meanwhile, Fitch's quarterback Antwan Harris had a marvelous night, accounting for all four of the Falcons' touchdowns.

Boardman will try to get into the win column this Friday, but again it will be a difficult task. The Spartans head south to have a showdown with Federal League foe Massillon Perry. Perry hasn't exactly been lighting up the scoreboard either scoring only 32 points total over an 0-5 first half (that includes the 13 Perry scored in a 43-13 blowout loss last week at North Canton Hoover). That being said, anytime Boardman goes on the road inside the conference, it tends to be an uphill battle.
It is hard to tell if any of the Spartans who will participate at Perry will be great enough to enter through the doors at Boardman's Hall of Fame, but it is certain that the 11 people who were honored before the Fitch game were. Prior to last Friday's start, a tailgate party was held honoring the 2013 Hall of Fame class and a day after the game a social was held at Cocca's Pizza in Boardman. This year's class was inducted on Sunday, Sept. 29 at a banquet held at Antone's. The elected 11 were Adriane Blewitt Wilson, class of 1998 track; Jeffrey Conklin, 1998 track; Matt Diffley, 1998 track; Joe DiPasqua, 1992 basketball; Steve Gresock, 1981 football; Meredith Konya, 1998 golf; longtime girls basketball head coach Ron Moschella as a contributor; Jesse Potter, 1996 basketball; Jeff Ryan, 1998 football; Donald Ross Jr., 1997 baseball; and Chris Tuminello, 1998 football. Also, the 1967 state runner-up baseball team received special recognition.
If these current Spartans can bounce back from a bad start and pick up their first win on the road at Perry this week, then they will deserve their own special recognition as well.
