The Boardman freshman gridders did what their varsity counterparts couldn't do the night before, beating rival Mooney on Cardinal turf. It would take until the second quarter of the season opening game for either team to put points on the board as Boardman took the early lead 6-0 with nine minutes to go in the half. It only took Mooney four minutes to answer with a touchdown pass and successful two-point conversion to lead the contest, 8-6. Boardman turned right around and marched down the field scoring just before the half and take a 12-8 lead into the third quarter. Boardman added two more touchdowns in the second half and led 24-8 when Mooney added another touchdown and two-point conversion narrowing the margin to six points with a little over two minutes to go in the game. Boardman's defense, which came up with three interceptions in the game, was able to close the door on the Mooney offense and Boardman secured a 24-16 win.
Austin Barone (11) leaps above Mooney's Jimmy Brown (25) and past Michael Dirienzo (52) to reel in a J.R. Ryan pass for a touchdown.
