Boardman senior Mark Hadley came in first overall out of 507 total varsity and junior varsity runners to lead the Spartans to the Division I championship at the GlenOak Golden Eagle Invitational on Saturday, Aug. 24 in Canton.
Finishing right behind Hadley's time of 15:36 in eighth place was sophomore Nathan Hadley in a time of 16:32. He was followed by senior Alan Burns in a time of 16:35, which was good enough for 9th place. Senior Justin Maroni was next up in 15th place at 16:46 and senior Jacob Kelleck was 41st overall at 17:35.
"This is really a big win," said Boardman head coach John Phillips. "This meet had a lot of regional and state level runners and to take first is a great accomplishment."
Scoring high for the Spartans in the JV race was senior Ryan McKeown, who ran an 18:55 in his first race since he was an eighth-grader at Center Middle School. Ryan's effort earned him this week's BW3 Runner of the Week Award.
"A kid like Ryan McKeown only makes your team better," explained Phillips. "His work ethic and dedication is obvious on the basketball court in winter and to have that same attitude every day at our practices just makes everyone want to be better."
