Scourge ready to kick off season

August 28, 2013
Special to the Town Crier

The Western Reserve Scourge football team recently completed its first year of competition in the Ohio Football League and is ready to get started for 2014. The Scourge, which played its home games at Baird Mitchell Field in Poland Village, finished their season with a 4-11 mark.

Jim Craven, a player and member of the team's owner group analyzed the season.

"Despite the record, we were competitive. Our offense averaged 21.5 points per game, which was eighth in the league out of 18 teams, and our defense gave up an average of 25 points per game. We had a halftime lead in seven out of the 11 games. As far as rosters go, I'm pretty sure that we had one of the youngest, if not the youngest, roster in the league. We have a lot to build on and a lot to look forward to."

Five of the team's players were selected to the OFL All Star Game to be played in Medina in September. Matt Wilson (WR), Arron Wayland (DE), Tyruss Patterson (LB), Jeremy Morgan (LB), and Kris Slater (S) will represent the Scourge in the OFL's version of the Pro Bowl. Josh Dodson (DL) received an honorable mention for his play on the defensive line. Dodson was also a two-way player as an offensive tackle.

"To say we're excited about five of our players being selected would be an understatement. We're extremely proud and these are the very guys upon which next year's team will be built," Craven said.

The team is now recruiting for the 2014 season for all positions. Prospective players must be 18 by the time the season starts in May of 2014. Anyone interested may contact Jim Craven at 330-502-9402 or Rob Eggleston at 330-261-1600. Players may go to wrscourge.com or the team's Facebook page for more information.

"We're looking to fill some position and add depth at others. We definitely want to pull some talent from this area. We would love to have some hometown athletes from Poland, Struthers, Boardman, and the surrounding areas." Craven advised.

Craven or Eggleston are also looking for help for non-players. Contact one of them for other opportunities to work with the team.
