Trustees sign second property agreement with fire department

Poland Township trustees approved giving the fire department use of a second parcel of land next to Station 92 on Ohio 170 at last week's meeting. It will allow for the expansion of the department's parking lot.

Township Administrator Jim Scharville said the Western Reserve Joint Fire District had been leased the property on Ohio 170 to build and operate the fire station. The fire district leases the property for $1 per year.

Nine years ago, the township got a grant to purchase the property next to the fire station. The home on the property was run down and was demolished after the township took ownership.

"We bought it with a grant knowing the fire department was going to be expanded," Scharville said.

While the property the fire station structure sits on is under the lease, the area needed for parking for responding firefighters wasn't part of the original agreement. Scharville said it was an oversight that needed to be corrected.

At last week's meeting, trustees gave the approval to give the fire department the land, thus allowing for the expansion of the parking lot.

Trustees also awarded the bid for the 2013 paving program. Six companies had bid the project and the low, best bid was Diorio Paving out of Girard at $110,411.05.
